1 - Does Exalead offer an image search?

Yes, Exalead's image search allows you to search millions of images published on the Web.

To begin a new image search, go to the Exalead home page and click on the "Images" link above the search field. You will also find a link for searching images in the same location on your results page.

  • A) Enter a description of the type of image you are seeking in the search box. For example, if you would like to view photographs of the Statue of Liberty, type "Statue of Liberty" in the box and click on the "Search" button.
  • B) Exalead allows you to choose a black background for image viewing. Try this unique function to determine which background makes scanning the results most comfortable for you. You will find this option to the left of the "Refine your search" panel.
  • C) To limit your search to images of a certain size, color, orientation or file format, use the "Refine your search" function located in the top right corner of the page.
  • D) This is an image search result. A preview, title, technical description and web address are displayed.

Note: It is possible that the images found with the Exalead image search function are protected by copyright. Exalead has no control over these images. Exalead cannot under any circumstances grant you the right to any use of these images. If you wish to use an image found with the image search, we advise you to contact the owner of the site on which it is found to obtain their authorization.

2 - What happens when I click on an image?

Below is the screen that will appear after you have clicked on a thumbnail image on the results page:

When you click on one of the thumbnail images that appear on the results page, you will be directed to a page that offers further information on that image. This page includes two sections (or two frames).

The upper portion of the page features a larger version of the image, as well as its name, dimensions, and file format (.jpg, .gif, .png, etc.). Clicking on that image will take you to the actual web page on which it appears. According to the size of the original image, it is possible that it will not be any larger than the version at the top of the page.

The bottom part of the page displays the web page on which the image was found.

  • A) Click on the Exalead logo to return to the homepage.
  • B) View details regarding the photo displayed (preview, title, description, web address)
  • C) Click on "Back to results" to return to the current search results page.
  • D) This window allows you to preview thumbnail images of the results without having to return to the search results page.

4 - How does the "Refine your image search" function work?

The "Refine your search" function is directly accessible on the image search results page. It allows you to narrow the results of your search by refining the terms or parameters. (Unlike advanced search, you refine your search after you have already entered a search request.)

Here are the refinement options displayed by default:

  • A) You may narrow your search to images of a particular size: small, medium or large.
  • B) Click "More choices" to refine your search even further.

Below is the full list of options available after you click "More choices":

  • A) You may select from three image different sizes: small, medium or large.
  • B) You may choose images sized for use as "wallpaper" images (images you can display as a background on your computer screen). The sizes available correspond to common monitor resolutions, such as 800x600 or 1024x768, etc.
  • C) You can choose to limit results to color, grayscale or black and white images.
  • D) You can choose images with a portrait or landscape orientation.
  • E) You can restrict your results to a specific file format, such as .jpg, .gif or .png.
  • F) You can enter additional keywords for searching within your results.
  • G)Click "Less choices" to return to the default options.

5 - How do I use the advanced image search?

Advanced image search offers you three categories of options for more narrowly targeting your search: What, Where and When. You may use each of the options if you wish, but remember, the more restrictions you place on your search, the fewer results you will obtain.

A) Enter your keywords in the top text entry field, formatting them using one of filtering options below, and then press the "Image Search" button.

B) In the What section, you may apply the following filters to refine your search:

  • Basic size for the image: small, medium or large
  • Images of a specific width, ex: width:1024
  • Images of a specific height, ex: height:768
  • Exact phrase searching, ex: "ocean at sunset"
  • Excluded words, ex: cow -brown
  • Search for words starting with certain letters, ex: water*. This will give results including any word beginning with the letters "water", such as "waterfall" and "waterway". This is done by placing an asterisk (*) after the word beginning.
  • Phonetic spelling: ex: soundslike:exallead , this will give results sounding like the word you have entered. This works well when you don't know how to spell a word for which you wish to search.
  • Approximate spelling, ex: spellslike:exlaead
  • Adjacent words, ex: (market NEAR financial)
  • Logical expressions, ex: ((fast OR speed) AND NOT light)
  • Regular expressions, which allow you to search using flexible text matching patterns. For instance, the regular expression "c.p" uses a period (.) as a wildcard for representing all letters. It would return matches such as "cap," "cop" and "cup".

C) In the Where section, you may apply the following filters to refine your search :

  • Choose a country
  • Choose a language
  • Choose to search within a specific site, ex: site:wikipedia.org

D) In the When section, you may limit your search to sites that have been updated since a date that you choose. Apply the following filters :

  • Updated after, ex: after:31/12/1999
  • Updated before, ex: before:31/12/1999
