Problems

1 - The display of thumbnail preview images seems very slow in my browser, why?

With certain versions of Internet Explorer, having too many temporary Internet files may slow the posting of results. Go to the "Tools" menu, then "Internet Options". In the "Temporary Internet files" box, click on "Delete temporary files".

2 - One or more advanced functions are not working for me, why?

Some advanced browsing functions (for example, keyboard shortcuts), may require a more current version of your web browser. Be sure you are using version 5.0 or higher of Microsoft Internet Explorer.

3 - The site seems slow, or parts of the screen flicker when I move my mouse, why?

Certain browsers, especially Microsoft Internet Explorer, download the images used by the Exalead website each time the mouse pointer goes over them again if page caching has been disabled. Re-activate page caching to correct this behavior.

4 - How may I resolve a specific technical problem?

You can probably resolve a certain number of problems encountered while using Exalead or other sites by emptying the cache of your browser.

If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE), follow the procedure below.

  • Open Microsoft Internet Explorer and click on the "Tools" menu.
  • Select "Internet Options".
  • Click the "General" tab.
  • Under the title "Temporary Internet files," click on "Delete temporary files." Note that clearing the history of the cache memory of the computer may take up to thirty minutes.
  • Click "OK".

If you use Mozilla Firefox, please follow the instructions below to empty your cache:

  • Open Mozilla Firefox.
  • Click "Tools" > "Options" > "Privacy".
  • Click "Empty cache".
  • Click "OK".

If the problem persists, you can also delete your cookies. Please note though that while deleting cookies can help you resolve some problems you may be encountering, it will also erase your preferences for some previously visited sites. To delete cookies in IE, do the following:

  • Select "Tools" > "Internet Options" > "General".
  • Under the "Temporary Internet files" title, click on "Delete cookies".
  • Click "OK" in the "Do you want to delete all cookies in the Temporary Internet Files folder?" message window.
  • Click "OK" to close the dialog box.

If you use Mozilla Firefox, please follow the instructions below to delete your cookies :

  • Open Mozilla Firefox.
  • Click on "Tools" > "Options" > "Privacy".
  • Click on "Cookies" > "Delete Cookies".
  • Click "OK".

If you require instructions for another browser, we advise you to consult the online help files for that browser.

5 - My search did not produce any relevant results. How may I improve my search?

Use more precise terms to describe exactly what you are seeking. Terms that are too general will give you too many results.

You may also wish to try Advanced Search. It is a function that helps you choose options for your current search that will give you more targeted results. You may choose as many options as you wish, but remember that the more restrictions you place on your search, the fewer results you will obtain.

For further information on this feature, read the advanced search.

You may also wish to try the "refine your search" feature. For further information on this feature, read refine your search.

6 - I can't connect to Exalead. Why?

If you are unable to connect to Exalead, try the following procedures:

  • Reboot your computer.

  • Verify that you are able to access other sites on the Internet. Try, for example, to connect to www.yahoo.com.

  • Close and re-open your browser, then try to reconnect to Exalead.

  • Empty your browser cache and delete your cookies.

  • If you access Exalead from behind a firewall, or a proxy server, or you are running an antivirus program, deactivate the relevant program and try to reconnect to Exalead. If one of these programs is incorrectly configured, it can interfere with your ability to connect to the Internet or access some sites. If deactivation of the program resolves your connection issue, we recommend that you consult the online help center that is associated with the program for further information.

  • If your computer is part of a company network, can the other computers in the network access Exalead? If you are in a school or university, it is possible that security applications for the school network can interfere with access to certain web sites.

  • It is possible that your DNS cache is obsolete? To erase the content of your DNS cache, open a MS-DOS prompt and execute the following command: "ipconfig/flushdns". To effect this operation, choose "Start" > "Programs" > "Accessories" > "Command prompt". Enter the command "ipconfig/flushdns" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter.

  • Deleting your 'hosts' file may resolve the problem. If you are using Windows, you have a file called "Hosts" in C:\WINDOWS (for Windows 98), or in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc (for Windows XP, NT or 2000). If you find an entry for Exalead therein, delete it. The IP address for Exalead changes at times. If your computer has saved an IP address in cache for Exalead, and the IP address changes, you will be unable to access the site until you have deleted the entry in the hosts file.

  • Are you using the latest version of your browser? If not, downloading the latest version of your browser may resolve the problem.

  • If you use Windows, have you downloaded the latest updates from Microsoft? If not, you can get them at Microsoft's update site.

  • Have you recently downloaded any free programs? If you are using Windows, undesirable programs, such as spyware and adware that can hinder your computers performance, are sometimes attached to free programs. Try to uninstall these programs and try again.
